Cape Town – A teenager who allegedly damaged vehicles at Nyanga police station and injured a police officer was known to be battling a drug problem, a Nyanga Community Policing Forum (NCPF)

official said on Sunday.

NCPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe told News24 that the youngster, and other vulnerable individuals, often sought refuge at the station because they had nowhere else to go.

“Those people live in the police station, they sleep at the entrance,” he said.

It was believed that the 19-year-old was under the influence when he committed the crime at around 04:00 on Saturday.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said the teen allegedly proceeded to slash the tyres of eight police vehicles and two private vehicles.

He apparently then stabbed an officer who tried to apprehend him in the arm.

Qwebe said efforts to get the teen social assistance had not yet been fruitful. They had not managed to locate his parents.

He added that residents of Nyanga, the country’s so-called “murder capital”, were more vulnerable because of damage to the police vehicles.

“As much as we are under-resourced, it’s now even more of a critical problem.”

The teen was expected to appear in court on Monday.
